Carach Angren have an incredible knack for
telling stories through their music. Each album is an adventure with the most
badass soundtrack along the way, and their new release ‘This Is No Fairytale’ is no exception! It’s a nightmarish
soundtrack that is full of beautiful orchestration and the haunting story of
two children and their quest to escape the darkness that threatens to swallow
them at every turn.
always enjoyed how Carach Angren approach their writing. The structure of their
songs is so unique to their writing style that it sets them apart from the rest
of the black metal genre. By blending black metal vocals, guitars, and drum
work with highly thematic elements, they create an incredibly intricate
atmosphere that is both evil and elegant, all while telling a story. It takes a
lot of talent to combine that many elements into your storytelling, and I for
one can absolutely appreciate how unique and powerful their albums really are.
The intro to the album is absolutely beautiful. It starts with a soft string
section that gradually builds up more and more layers, moving seamlessly into
the first track “There is No Place Like
Home” where it all comes crashing down in this evil, odd-time riff that
will send chills down your spine. The track is about the two kids with an
abusive drunk and a burnt-out junkie as parents, and their spiral into the
nightmare that the albums is predicated on. All the tracks flow easily into
each other, giving the illusion that the whole album is just a single 45-minute
long track, which I really enjoy. It allows for a much more immersive
experience that really comes to enhance the storytelling nature of the album.
“Two Flies Flew into a Black Sugar Cobweb” is easily
one of the longer song titles I’ve ever had to write out, and is also one of my
favourite tracks off the album. It starts with more beautiful orchestration
that I’m clearly a big sucker for. I like this song in particular for its
balance between heaviness and the soft, darker elements. The movement between
those elements really adds a theatrical element and an unmistakable sense of
dread or doom that is so integral to the story being told. You can almost feel
the darkness closing in around you as you’re running for your life, confused
one of the other key elements that really separate Carach Angren from the rest
of the black metal genre is how less emphasis is placed on having the guitar
carry the burden, and more is placed on spreading it out between all of the
members who equally add key parts of the colossal atmosphere that is created.
all, ‘This Is No Fairytale’ is
genuinely a fantastic album that I think any fan of black metal, horror, or any
combination thereof can enjoy. It is a wonderfully dynamic album that takes you
on an incredible journey through some of the darkest situations imaginable. Carach
Angren absolutely nailed it with
this record, and I cannot wait to hear what they come up with next!
