Heavy metal has always been about expressing different opinions. Bands that are highly successful now could not have reached so far if they didn’t have an architect; an invisible force which handles all the background work for them. Dear friends, I am talking about a publicist who has been a powerful force behind every successful artist. Heck, it’s difficult to find an experienced music journalist who has single-handedly shaped the career of well-established bands. Maria Ferrero of Adrenaline PR is one such veteran who has done wonders from last 3 decades. We at Metal Wani had an opportunity to talk to Maria about all things metal and her amazing journey from 80’s till now.
Like every story, Maria’s journey started in the 80’s when she was working with MegaForce Records. She recalls: “I was 16 at the time when Anthrax had a new singer, and I was asked to write a letter to metal magazines for Interviews. The entire promotion plan was a success and I became a publicist. I didn’t even know what it meant. I am a fan; music and magazines mean everything to me, and I just helped on the other end to put it together. It’s something I still pride myself on: caring about the fans and the bands.”
Having known Maria for the last few years, I have learnt a lot from her and the amazing Adrenaline PR team. She is one of the most humble and kindest person I have ever come across. There’s a lot more about her which people are not aware of. In this 15-minute chat with Maria, I divided the conversation into two parts. In Part 1, she discusses her first assignment as a publicist which sparked an inception of her journey, her opinion on digital media with podcasts, her day-to-day activities with the Adrenaline team consisting of Arielle Rosselli, Natalie Camillo and Katy Irizarry, her strategies to tackle risks in the music industry, her opinion on the roadblocks she has faced, and much more.
In this section, Maria Ferrero talks on the importance of online and print media to circulate information, her opinion on publicists considered as rockstars being a ‘myth’, the rewards for being a publicist, how Adrenaline PR deals with multiple labels, her biggest motivational rode models who have inspired her, her passion for cooking different cuisines and how she would have ended up being a chef, and much more.
